www.hotforwords.com to request words. Why is football called soccer in some parts of the world? Hello my dear students… it’s FIFA World Cup Soccer time again! It’s football What? It’s football, not soccer. Not this again! FIFA stands for Fédération Internationale de Football Association Oh yeah.. that’s right.. they call it football everywhere else in the world, except for here in the US, where we call it soccer. Not just the US.. other places call it soccer as well! Really? OK.. I think it’s time for another lesson about Football and Soccer. So let’s get started! Intro I taught you in an earlier video about why football is called soccer in the US and football in most of the rest of the world. Show bit from video As we learned in that video the term Soccer was actually invented in England as another name for the game where you used your feet to move a ball around a field. It all started when the Rugby School thought it would be cool to actually carry the ball down the field instead of just kicking it. Football enthusiasts were horrified and split off from Rugby Football in 1863 and formed Association Football to keep the ball on the ground! Around that time, Brits also liked to shorten words and terms in funny ways, for example they called breakfast, brekkers and rugby was often times called rugger. Since Association Football was such a long name it was shortened to AsSOC. Football and eventually just Soccer. Since the term soccer was created in England you would think …

American football is SO way better than English soccer.
1. The U.S. is the leading nation of the free world, so naturally all try to emulate us.
2. All the gridiron gear makes for some really rough manly playing (we view soccer as a bit sissified….try having getting hit in the gut from a 300lb dude wearing a helmet).
3. Half time commercials are worth waiting a year for. xD

it may be kinda girly to wear pads, but american football was an improvement on rugby, a game invented so men could be close to and interlock arms with other men in a socially acceptable way.

@tegeagent007 First you forgot field goals. Second It is not just a bunch of fat asses. They have an extream amount of muscle mass, and yes many linemen do have fat on them but most of the time I would call it meaty not fat. They are in good condition. Yes, it is a stop and go game but soccer has many fake injuries. Reminds me of basketball with out all the scoring. Oh and most people relate boring with low scoring, not the same thing people.

@awsomemojack Several Problems with your statement. One see some of the amazing catches and runs of a professional team. That is amazing. Not saying soccer is bad. I do enjoy the sport but why do you have to compare the two? They are not similar. Both have advantages and play to peoples likes. Would it even be fun if there was only one sport in the world and only one style car and only one style house that everyone lived in, no. Leave sports alone THEY MAKE LIFE FUN!

American football is more fun to watch, but football/soccer is more fun to play, and cheaper to play since in American football we kinda need pads and helmets if we dont wanna die.
